Shampooing? Not Too Much, Please! By Maria Tsaguriya. I Love Hair!

Everyone wants their hair to feel light and clean (that “right after shampooing, squeaky clean” feeling), but shampooing your hair too often can actually lead to dry, oily or frizzy hair.

Our bodies’ maintenance is remarkable.  If we become too hot, we sweat.  When we are too cold, we shiver to stay warm.  Our body also protects our hair by producing an oil called sebum to create a natural coating for our hair.  So, how often should we shampoo?  Ideally, 2-3 times a week.

Over shampooing can actually lead to over production of sebum and make your scalp oilier quicker.  Not shampooing as often may feel uncomfortable at first but after a few months the amount of sebum your scalp produces will decrease.

If your hair is super fine and requires shampooing more often or if you go to the gym regularly, then there are some tricks to save your hair.

Put conditioner on your ends and apply shampoo only to your roots.  Also, applying dry shampoo can help delay the need to shampoo can help delay the need to wash your hair.  My favorite dry shampoo is Pssst.  It’s inexpensive and can be found at any pharmacy.

Have fun with your hair as well.   Your hair a few days in will be more pliable for up-dos or braiding.  Experiment with scarves and wraps as well.

The healthier your hair is, the less breakage there will be.  Who doesn’t love that?!
