Everything in life is about consistency.  Consistency in your life allows you to grow stronger in all different ways.  In life, we make mistakes by being inconsistent.  In order to accomplish anything life, you must walk a consistent path.

This week, hair stylists Thea Derecola, Leila Vea and Sai got a chance to work with fabulous designer Christine Alcalay on her Autumn/Winter 2012 collection show.  The atmosphere at SOHO House was the perfect match to Christine’s line.  The models and stylists mingled with one another, while Christine walked around finalizing last details.

Christine picked the perfect locale for her show, set in a hotel room with beautiful distressed wooden floors, and elegant light fixtures and furniture that only enhanced her pieces.  Walking through the room, I felt as if I was sent back to an era where fashion was given an air of almost effortlessness.  The loose flowing clothing fit the models as if they were wearing nothing but water or air.

Sai described her experience, saying, “I liked the way the models were placed as if in an art exhibit as opposed to walking a runway.  I felt it created a more personal and less ‘stuffy’ atmosphere.”

Leila added, “I loved the space.  I felt there was a more intimate approach to Christine’s presentation.  She allowed the viewer to really admire and take in the full affect of her pieces.”

Thea said, “it was a calculated reflection of American beauty, nineteen twenties flapper girl, Zelda Fitzgerald in a modern way.  The hair invoked the mood of disheveled elegance, and complimented Christine’s vision.  It was ‘The Beautiful and the Damned’ in a lost and future era.  Christine’s positioning of the models reflected directly from Edward Hopper whose inspirations depicted daily life.”

To give the models their “elegant, effortless” look the ladies started out by spraying the hair with Davine’s Sea Salt spray to give the hair a beachy/gritty texture, with some hold for the base.  They then sectioned the hair into four sections; one on each side of the head, one on top, and one at the back.  After sectioning the hair, it was backcombed directing the hair away from the face, and put into a loose low ponytail to keep a raw and unkempt look.  Lastly, they sprayed the hair with Davine’s Invisible Hair Spray.

The entire experience left all of us wanting more.

After finishing college, I then started my two-decade journey with Vidal Sassoon working towards the Creative Director position in the salons.  Ambition then led me for the next 5 years to travel to London and Los Angeles to hone my teaching skills in the schools and academy’s.  My passion for interacting and teaching developed and has crossed over to my work in the salon.

I also feel, each room should have a certain color scheme.  I like the idea of a bedroom having calming tones; grey blues and pale greens being my palate of choice.  The bathroom should be light and fresh, since that’s how you want to feel when you’re there right?  Browns, greens and orange tones for the kitchen invoke that sense of harvest.  Lastly for the living room/den/entertainment room I like something a little more bold.  You entertain here, so perhaps you want brighter and warmer hues.

Having too much of one texture in a room overwhelms and creates monotony for the eyes.  Alternatively, throwing in one or two other different material/texture types, like taking a raw butcher block island and placing it against/near the smoothness of  stainless steel appliences, lets the two textures compliment one another and create a sense of harmony in the space.

Just recently I was looking through architecturaldigest.com at the kitchens of some celebrities and I noticed Lance Armstrong’s Spanish-Colonial.  The combination of the granite counter tops and the stainless steel range, with earthy green cabinets and nice dark brown wood accents, against the bench style seating at the dining table stretched along a wall full of windows create a feeling of sleek class, while still including comfort and a bit of a homey ambiance.

No matter what, it’s nice to see each individul’s style come through in their living space.  Most importantly I think color and texture are key.

Dissatisfaction occurs when the sales person, or in my case, technician fails on consultation, or promises results that they might not be able to achieve at that moment.  For me, if the results are not achievable at that moment, I will suggest a couple other options, and make the idea, that the client/customer came to me with, a work in progress.  With this you assure two things; they will not be discouraged from their idea, and also, you will insure their future visits to your establishment.

The ability to delight and surprise is at the core of every service or product.  Making unclear and over hyped promises will open up doubts and illusions you might not be able to achieve.  Yes, of course you have to make promises to get their attention and get them to try it.  The mistake is when you put more effort into promises and less into what you are indeed able to deliver.

Research shows that what people remember is far more important than what they actually experienced.  This happens in the peak of their experience, whether good or bad, and at the ending.  The easiest way to amplify customer satisfaction then, is to under promise, then, deliver much more and make sure it happens during the end of the experience you provide.

Who says men can’t show a bit of pizzazz?  Look at birds for instance.  Predominantly, the male birds are brighter and showier than the ladies.  The time has come men!  Show your sense of style!

Such designers as Paul Smith, Etro, DSQUARED2 and JCrew offer a great selection of men’s clothing that provide a plethora of color selection, and quite a nice choice of texture and pattern as well.

Even if your wardrobe consists of blacks, grays and browns, try adding a colored belt or shoes and I think you’ll find a complete change in your look.  I’m going to follow my own advice; you give it a try too.
