Every New Beginning Comes from Some Other Beginnings End by Claudia Weldon

” They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” Andy Warhol

After working for a large corporation for 28 years, I decided to change my life. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever decided to do; but well worth it. I now work at Cristiano Cora, which I am finding to be a more open-minded company that allows for a reduced and more flexible schedule. My decision to come here was not light handed, but coming to Cristiano was such an organic decision. We have known eachother for decades, worked closely at Vidal Sassoon being that I was a manager and Cristiano was the creative Director; together we ran the salon.  This seemed like my new home away from home. Coming to my new home has resulted, in me finally having the time to spend with my family and pursue other interests that I had postponed for much too long. Finding this beautiful balance of being a dedicated mother and a comitted stylist has changed my energy behind the chair. With the change of scenery and location I am really loving the new feel of the space. The design and use of shape makes you look at hair in a different light.  With all that’s going on around the world, I really life is too precious to waste. We must enjoy every minute while we can and dedicate every moment to what keeps us passionate. I LOVE HAIR

Vintage Now by Damon Alfonso

What used to be popular in the burlesque community is now slowly making into mainstream fashion.  The 40’s hair influence is clearly becoming the latest hair craze and should make it’s appearance in the fashion runways this Fall season.  Vintage hairstyling isn’t anything new.  It appeared very briefly in the 80’s with fans of Elvis and James Dean known as Rockabillies bringing the look back and making it current.  It retained a small but strong cult following that has managed to keep it alive until now.
My prediction is these styles will be a little bit more exaggerated opposed to subtle details.  Faux-hawks are a prime example of keeping it safe but adding a little edge to your look.

Color may even play a great deal in this upcoming trend.  I really can’t picture anyone just wearing pin-up styles and fingerwaves and leaving the hair color natural.  People who wear these styles are making statements and just want to have fun.  And why not?  The disheveled has made it’s run and it is now over. The next season will be more lines, structure and neatness.  The 70’s shag and the 80’s assymetrical hair will be taking a break …  at least for now.  I LOVE HAIR!

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty by Arnulfo

I went to the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum a week after it opened and was floored by the huge turn out.  I’ve been to other fashion exhibits but I’ve never seen anything like this.  It was breathtaking!

The overall feel of this exhibit is both romantic and tortured.  I kept hearing a collective “wow” throughout the first room as you were met by two mannequins wearing couture gowns.  Each room after was given a dramatic scenario for different periods throughout his fashion career.  Sound effects, mood lighting, videos, classical and techno music were added to enhance the visual experience of the opulent designs.  This exhibit was a fresh reminder as to why I moved to New York – for the arts.

I highly recommend everyone see this exhibit even if you are not into fashion because McQueen easily blurred the line between fashion and art.  This exhibit is the perfect way to pay homage to the genius designer.  Savage Beauty is running from May 4th – July 31, 2011.

Straw hats forewer!By Elena Eresko! Enjoy! I LOVE HAIR!

Within so many seasons, the straw hat is the most popular summer acessory. Let’s see about the origins and how many variations there are.  Listed are some of the popular ones.

The Boater Straw hat- Also known as “Sailor”, “Sennit”, “Boater”, and “Skimmer”. It is the stiff straw hat distinguished by a flat top crown. The Boater Straw is still considered as one of the most dressy of the straw hats, thoroughly suitable for evening and the more formal occasions, and still preferred by some for all–around wear.

The Optimo Straw hat
At one time the favored shape for Panama hats. The Optimo has an un-dented, full blocked crown with a narrow ridge running over it lengthwise. The Optimo is now considered an extremely conservative shape, and the demand for it in recent years has been negligible in the stores.

Genuine Panama Straw hats

For season after season the Panama Straw hat has been the leader in the market place because of its unique combination of smart appearance, lightness, coolness, and durability. Panama Straw hats are “genuine”, meaning that they are all hand-woven of “toquilla” fiber and imported from Ecuador or South America.

Texture & Weave
The appearance of the surface of the straw hat resulting from the type of material used and the way it is woven or braided is a major style variation and is likewise a major quality factor in straw hats. In the dressier straws such as Panamas and Milan’s, the best-looking and best quality hat is the one with the finest and most even weaves.

Quality The quality of the material of which the straw hat is woven or braided is reflected in its appearance. Likewise, the quality of workmanship in producing evenness and uniformity of weave or braid strongly effects the appearance, as do the care and skill exercised in bleaching, dyeing, blocking, and finishing.

These are some of the iconic figures who have become the fashion victims of straw hats.

Brigitte Bardot is wearing the bigest straw hat!

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel..

Frank Sinatra in straw Fedora hat.

So, lets wear straw hats! It’s not only fashionable but also protect you from the hot summer sun. Get ready for summer and buy your own straw hat!
